“Why are Trump's biggest donors spending nearly $10 million trying to buy a Democratic primary in a district that Trump has zero chance of winning? The short answer is they really do not want this guy Alex Bores to get elected. But the details here are wild and I think worth your time. By the way, I'm not being paid to say any of this, just feels important. There are some AI industry heavyweights, in particular Marc Andreessen and OpenAI's president, Greg Brockman, who are the ones spending $10 million on some very controversial tactics trying to oppose Alex Bores. What these guys are up to opposing Bores is pretty simple. They are heavily invested in AI, and Alex Bores passed the nation's strongest AI regulation law last year, New York's RAISE Act. And the reason that this particular race has gotten so much national news and made Alex Bores kind of a minor political celebrity at this point is that they're just being unusually open about what they're up to. Like, they have dropped an absurd, attention-grabbing amount of money in this race on purpose. When they were called out for extremely sketchy tactics — I'm talking about fake Twitter accounts that called for violence and impersonating journalists — they didn't really even try to deny it, they just publicly announced their intention to use any means necessary to make an example out of Alex Bores. They are telling every politician in the country to watch this race and learn what happens when you mess with Donald Trump's biggest donors. This general playbook, getting in bed with Trump and dropping mountains of cash against anybody who opposes you, this is exactly how Donald Trump keeps his hold on the Republican party and our democracy, despite being so deeply unpopular with everyday people. But here's the thing. Right now, it looks like these tactics might actually backfire. So far, they've basically just made Bores really famous for standing up to big tech and he's neck and neck right now to win his race. If he does, if he pulls that off and he makes these guys waste their money, politicians won't be afraid to stand up to Donald Trump's biggest donors, they'll be afraid not to. I really do not want what worked with crypto to work with AI and become the main way that every industry tries to buy and sell elections in this country. And between now and June 23rd, when this primary ends, voters in New York can do something about that. And if you know someone in New York, you can do something about that too. So please take a second. If you don't know anybody in New York, you know somebody who knows somebody in New York, consider sending this video and telling someone about the stakes of this election. Thanks.”
“Pick a dictator, any dictator. If you offered them a technology that would let them surveil everyone everywhere at all times, every single one of them would snatch that tech right out of your hands. For most of history, there was a natural limit on how much a government could spy on its own people because there weren't enough humans to do the surveilling. And even if a regime could collect all of the data, mining it for what it actually needed in the time frame that it needed it, that was a challenge all its own. AI erases both of those limits. And in the wrong hands, unregulated, that turns into an accelerant for an authoritarian backslide. Democracies thus are weaker for it. And the fight over whether America lets this happen is playing out right now in a single congressional race with election day on June 23rd. It's a Democratic primary in New York's 12th district, and it has snowballed into a referendum on one single question: Should AI be regulated? At the center of it is a candidate named Alex Bores. Hold that name, we're going to come back to him. First, let's go over why this isn't hypothetical. We're already seeing alarming signs of authoritarianism in the US. There's been prosecution of political opponents, which thankfully has so far mostly failed. Opponents have also been targeted with tax audits, and I mean the kind of rare and intensive ones that hardly anyone faces. So it's unusual to say the least that multiple of Trump's high-profile opponents have been hit by one. There have been raids against civil society groups and blatant threats against the opposition. At the same time, the administration is moving to supercharge the surveillance apparatus it already has with AI. A Department of Homeland Security report this January outlined several new projects, including ones that would use AI to process incoming tips for ICE, predict whether non-citizens will fail to comply, and analyze social media. Now, combine that with a president who tells top military officials that they're going to fight the enemy within, and a vice president who said groups that fund left-wing violence will be treated like a terrorist organization. And then, at least to me, it starts to feel less like one of Trump's usual soundbites and more like an actual plan. Right now, the current uses tend to target immigrants, which is already causing massive social unrest. But this is just the most convenient place to start if the goal is removing constraints on abuse of power. Targeting outgroups has always been a key tactic of authoritarian regimes. And the same apparatus built to surveil and coerce one group, it never stays pointed at just that group. And it already isn't. ICE has unlawfully detained at least 100 American citizens. And routine surveillance already sweeps up citizens' data by design. In April 2025, ICE handed a company called Palantir a $30 million contract to build something called Immigration OS. Lock in the name Palantir, we're going to come back to it later. One component of ImmigrationOS, reported earlier this year, is a tool called Elite. It pulls in roughly 80 million Americans' Medicaid records, and this is the data that people handed over just to get healthcare, and it turns them into a deportation targeting dashboard. It drops potential targets onto a map, pulls up a dossier on each one, and assigns a confidence score for their current home addresses. What this looks like in reality is that an ICE officer opens up an app, sees a map that ranks exactly which doors he should go knock on next, and that map is built from the health data of low-income Americans who had no choice but to hand over that data if they wanted healthcare. Remember what I said at the start about regimes never having enough people to sort through everything they collect? This is exactly that. The limit was never the data because the government already had Medicaid records. It was really just the labor of using and doing something with that data. Palantir's AI removes the limit, and it puts the whole thing in one horrifying little app. In another example, Flock Safety has blanketed American towns with automated license plate readers that were sold to police as a tool against car theft. In May 2025, 404 Media revealed that ICE, with no contract of its own, had been tapping Flock's nationwide network anyway through local police running searches on its behalf. We're talking roughly 4,000 immigration-related searches. Their same system has been used to track protesters. And in one case, a Texas deputy used it to hunt a woman down across state lines over a self-managed abortion. The battle to prevent an AI-powered surveillance state is ongoing, though. One of the most important flashpoints this year was the firestorm between AI company Anthropic and the Department of War back in February. The Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, demanded that Anthropic strip the guardrails off its model and let the military use them for, quote, "any lawful use". Anthropic has a red line it would not cross: no mass domestic surveillance of Americans. When it refused to budge, Hegseth designated Anthropic a supply chain risk. This is something normally reserved for hostile foreign actors. OpenAI, by contrast, swooped in with a contract it said guaranteed against surveillance, but which, upon closer read, would essentially let the government do whatever it wanted. So where does that leave us currently? For now, the laws mostly still hold and Congress still matters. It still has oversight power. If Democrats take the House in the midterms, they can demand answers from agencies like ICE, hold public hearings, and use control of spending as leverage. They could also pass laws that require warrants before agencies use data they otherwise need a judge to get. They could force any large-scale government use of these systems into the open, keep a human accountable for the highest stakes decisions, and all of this before the administration can lock in our surveillance state. But for that to happen, we need legislators who understand the technology well enough to regulate it, and who will act before the abuse becomes routine. Let me tell you, there are not many of them, and the few who try have faced ferocious and well-funded backlash. Because here's the thing that fuses all of this together. A well-funded, staunchly pro-AI, anti-regulation coalition is spending millions to send one message to every politician in the country. Try to regulate AI and we'll end your career. The clearest case study is playing out right now in that New York race that I mentioned. Here's the situation. Jerry Nadler, the incumbent for the district for the last 34 years, he announced his retirement. Because New York 12 is reliably Democratic, whoever wins the June 23rd primary will almost certainly win the seat. Alex Bores is one of the candidates. He wrote and passed the RAISE Act, one of the most comprehensive AI laws in the country because it makes the biggest AI developers publish their safety plans and report on serious incidents. As you can imagine, this made him a target. A super PAC called Leading the Future, or LTF, launched in 2025 with more than 140 million pledged. Its backers include tech billionaires like Marc Andreessen, OpenAI president Greg Brockman, and Joe Lonsdale, the co-founder of Palantir. Right? The name I told you to hang on to? The company building ICE a targeting system? That one. Its co-founder is bankrolling the effort to take out the politician trying to regulate it. LTF said that it would spend around $10 million to make sure that Bores lost and to send a message to every other politician. And this specifically is their playbook. Scare people off regulating AI at all, attack weaker candidates who disagree with them, then claim credit when they lose. In sort of a darkly funny way, it means that they don't actually go after stronger candidates who might actually win. Why? Well, because it's all about the optics. If politicians only ever see them winning when they intervene, then LTF looks unstoppable. And we've seen this exact playbook before. LTF is run by the same people behind the pro-crypto super PAC, Fairshake. Fairshake largely stayed out of Elizabeth Warren's own race, even though she's a staunch advocate for crypto regulation, and instead they went after weaker Warren allies like Katie Porter, then claimed credit when they lost. The result was a Congress that lost its appetite to regulate crypto at all. And the hypocrisy gets richer. My favorite example came after Bores entered the race. LTF ran ad after ad attacking Bores for his four-year stint at Palantir from 2014 to 2019. These ads conveniently skipped the part where he left the company in protest over the renewal of an ICE contract, then got into politics to do something about it, while also leaving out that the ad itself is paid for in part by Joe Lonsdale, the co-founder of Palantir. The audacity is staggering. Alright, on to Alex Bores. His background lines up almost too neatly with everything I've just walked through, though in a good way. He has a master's in computer science from Georgia Tech, so we won't be sitting in hearings watching him ask the kind of inane tech questions that everyone but the 80-year-old in power already understands. He's already written and passed AI law, he said AI oversight would be his priority in Congress, and he has a consistent anti-authoritarian record beyond AI. So the RIOT Act, anti-ICE positions, ending Citizens United, limiting presidential power, etc. Bores said that he entered the race over tech's impact on democracy in the first place. So obviously he is LTF's number one target. And no wonder the moment that they came after him, other people rallied, which is what in turn has made this race a referendum him on AI regulation in the first place. So who's rallying behind him? First, Anthropic, which funded a super PAC set up in response to LTF that they called Public First. And before anyone yells at me in the comments, this isn't me endorsing Anthropic or saying it's as simple as Anthropic is the good guys. Obviously, part of this is a public image play that earns them, at the very least, goodwill. But that is a whole other video. For now, just stick with me on who the counter-LTF super PACs are. Second is crypto billionaire Chris Larsen, who funded a super PAC called You Can Push Back. He said he's doing it because he doesn't like the attempt to make an example of Bores for just daring to come up with reasonable guardrails. And finally, Dream New York, which is funded by a few employees from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Jane Street. The result? For just the two leading candidates, more than $34 million in super PAC spending, plus another $12 million from the campaigns themselves, thus making it one of the most expensive House primaries on record. And all of it comes down to June 23rd, just days away with about a third of voters still undecided. I, of course, hope that Bores takes it because he looks like one of America's best shots at actually regulating this industry. Plus he's fire tested. He's shown that he'll stand up to some of the most powerful people in the country, which takes a lot of nerve and is the opposite of protecting his peace. We need people like that because of the bigger picture. Authoritarianism is a real threat to American democracy. AI supercharges that threat and hands unprecedented power to a tiny number of people who are spending millions to make sure no one regulates the technology that is making them billions, which is the same technology that, in the wrong hands, will enable a backslide into authoritarianism in ways the world has never seen because of those limits that I keep mentioning, they no longer apply. Voting for congresspeople and politicians who get it and act to do something about it is one of the few levers that we, the people, can pull right now. It's our best shot at regulating the industry and keeping any check on this power. Put most simply, if you care about democracy, then you care about regulating AI. So here's what I need you to do next. If you are a New York 12 voter, go to ny12.org. It's linked in the description. Everyone else, share this video with people concerned about democracy and people who have an opinion on AI, whatever their take might be. I'm Lauren on AI, and to everyone who has subscribed in the last few weeks, thank you for giving a brand new channel a chance.”
“So something really weird is going on right now in New York, and I wanted to quickly talk about it. The AI industry is spending millions of dollars, they pledged $10 million, trying to make sure that this one guy, Alex Bores, is not elected. That is a wild amount of money to spend on a campaign like this, and it doesn't seem to be working. But why? Who is this guy? What are they so upset about? So yeah, Alex Bores, he's running for Congress. He's relatively young. He has, I think, a master's degree in computer science. He used to work in the tech industry. So he knows what's going on with technology more than most Congresspeople. And he's worried about AI. And not just like environmental concerns. He's worried about what I consider to be like the really acute, like serious concerns. He's worried about AI-enabled bioweapons, automated cyber attacks, lost control, that kind of thing. And honestly, I don't know very much about him. But my friends who are more into politics than I am, they're very excited by this guy. And the AI industry is really out to get him because he's responsible for this law in New York, the RAISE Act, which as far as I can tell, is actually like a fairly tame piece of legislation. It's basically like, OK, you have to have some kind of safety tests. You have to report what they are and, you know, the results. And if it seems like something you're making is really dangerous, like that it might be responsible for more than, I think, 50 deaths or $1 billion in damages. If it's really dangerous, New York can like sue you to not release it, something like that. And I think most people, when they hear that, they think like, was that not already the law? Like, you know, several of the heads of these companies are saying that there's more than 10% chance that AI causes human extinction. Like there's really no legal requirement to have any safety test at all? And if you do have tests and they come back saying, "oh, your AI might kill hundreds of people", you can legally just like keep that to yourself? Yeah. So this is really not very much regulation at all, right? Like this is a level of regulation which is less than we apply to like children's toys, for example. Like we're nowhere near the range of, you know, drugs or airplanes or any of these other things that, things which, by the way, are much less dangerous than AI has the potential to be. So yeah, it's a pretty tame law. It's quite reasonable in my opinion, and I am not the most pro-regulation guy in the world. But obviously, a lot of AI industry people go apeshit at this because they don't want any rules to apply to them at all. So there's a huge amount of lobbying to try to kill this law, and they managed to get it modified to basically gut the whole thing. So the law is pretty much powerless. They removed the bit where a company can actually be blocked from releasing a system that's found to be dangerous. So it's basically just like, you have to have some tests and report the results. But also, they reduced the fine for not doing that down to just $1 million, which for these giant companies, well, hang on. So I forgot to say, it only ever applied to companies with more than $500 million of revenue. So basically, it only applies to, I think, like five companies. Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepMind, xAI, probably a couple more that I'm forgetting. But it's, you know, the only people bound by this at all are these enormous companies such that a $1 million fine is really just nothing. And I don't know, I think it was probably a pretty sensible law. Having it completely neutered in this way, it's unfortunate. But it's kind of all in the game, I guess. Like, you have to expect industry is going to try to not be regulated in any way whatsoever. That's what they do. Don't blame a wolf for being hungry. That's just what wolves do. But the thing is, now, they're basically trying to make an example out of Alex Bores, right? So you have these venture capitalists and Greg Brockman, the president of OpenAI, and the co-founder of Palantir, these giant, you know, tech industry people. They make a new super PAC, like a financial vehicle for funding politics stuff. And they say, yeah, we're going to spend more than $10 million just making sure that this guy, Alex Bores, does not get elected. Like to punish him, basically, like for daring to stand up against us. So they're buying all of these attack ads. And the ads are really funny because they don't talk about AI, like hardly at all. And obviously they aren't talking about AI, right? Like, they want to punish Bores for his position on AI, but if they talk about his position on AI, like, the American public is kind of on his side, right? Like, AI is really not popular right now. So instead they say, oh, you shouldn't vote for Alex Bores because he worked for Palantir. He used to work for Palantir. And Palantir worked with ICE, and that's bad. And, you know, I think that is bad. And he did in fact work at Palantir, but as I understand it, he quit because of the ICE thing. Like, I haven't looked into the details very closely, but my understanding is his former colleagues say, yeah, he was unhappy with the ICE situation, he raised concerns about it, and that's why he left. But the thing that's funny about this is, like, one of the main funders of this super PAC that's running these ads is one of the co-founders of Palantir. Like, you're trying to tar this man by association with yourself. Come on. That pisses me off. But yeah, the other funny thing about, you know, all these ads and all this spending is it doesn't really seem to be working. Like, I guess because of how ridiculous this whole thing is, a bunch of other people, including Anthropic, started pouring in money on the other side. And as far as I can tell, the candidates are pretty much neck and neck in the polls. So all this money that this PAC is spending on trying to kill Bores's campaign. Doesn't seem to be working out for them. Although, I mean, he's not winning, but he's not losing either. It's neck and neck. So we'll see what happens. But I think this does matter because it sets a precedent, right? Like, is the AI industry able to, you know, bully lawmakers who dare to stand up to them? Does this kind of intimidation tactic work? And we'll have to wait and see. The election is on the 23rd. Although I think there's early voting starting on the 13th, so we might get some information a little earlier than that. If you know people in New York, ask them what they think. I don't know. I mean, I hope he wins. I think that would be funny. I'm not being paid to say that. This is my personal opinion, not representing any employer or organization or anything like that. But yeah, personally, I hope he wins.”
“Around here, trust is earned. Not by words, but by actions. And Ben McAdams? He's earned our trust. When it mattered most, McAdams stood tall. Fought back against MAGA, knowing it would cost him his job. When women's rights were under attack, Ben held the line. Now, when the stakes couldn't be higher, we need a congressman we can trust. We need Ben McAdams. Think Big PAC is responsible for the content of this ad.”
“Barry Moore has stood with President Trump from day one. "Tonight I'm here to endorse Donald Trump." And President Trump stands with Barry Moore for Senate. President Trump gives Barry his complete and total endorsement. Together, Trump and Moore are defending our border, standing up to radicals, and always putting America first. Barry Moore for U.S. Senate. Trump endorsed. Trump approved.”
“"To the people of Alabama, Barry Moore is running for the Senate." Barry Moore is President Trump's only pick for Senate. Barry Moore served this country with honor, created jobs as a small businessman, and cut taxes for Alabama. It's why Barry Moore is the only Trump-endorsed candidate for Senate. "Congressman Barry Moore, he will not let you down. He's a great guy." Vote Alabama conservative Barry Moore. "He will never let you down."”
“D.C. politicians aren't exactly brain surgeons, but Georgia can fix that problem. Conservative Dr. John Cowan is a brain surgeon, literally. In Congress, he'll run circles around those Washington liberals. An affordable economy, combating illegal immigration, conservative Georgia values. And John Cowan will stand with President Trump. Stopping the woke mob isn't brain surgery. It's just good Georgia common sense. On June 16th, send Dr. John Cowan to Congress. “New Yorkers need a congressman who's not afraid to stand up for what's right. Alex Bores is fighting every day to protect our democracy and civil rights, and to keep our neighbors safe from ICE. As a computer engineer, Alex Bores saw how dangerous unregulated AI could be, and he wrote New York's RAISE Act to put real safeguards on AI and hold big tech accountable. Alex Bores has been clear from day one. Abolish Trump's ICE, take on corporate greed, and put New Yorkers first. Jobs and Democracy PAC is responsible for the content of this advertising.”
“From day one, Alex Bores has had one priority: fighting back against Trump. Not with social media posts, with legislation. 30 bills passed in Albany. He guaranteed New Yorkers access to abortion medication when Trump came for it. He took on Trump to pass the strongest AI accountability law in the country. Now he's taking that fight to Congress. Abolishing ICE, defending our democracy. Send a fighter to Congress. Alex Bores. Jobs and Democracy PAC is responsible for the content of this advertising.”
“In our New York, a $9 bagel barely registers. Scaffolding's been up for years, and we know the dogs in our building before we know the owners. It's a lot, but it's home. Alex Bores grew up in these neighborhoods. Fifth generation. In Albany, he's been working to bring down housing costs so the families who made this place can afford to stay in it. Now he's running for Congress to stand up to Donald Trump. Alex Bores. From here, for here. Jobs and Democracy PAC is responsible for the content of this advertising.”
“Kevin Hern built his success from the ground up, working his way through school, becoming an engineer, and building a business that created jobs. That shapes everything he does in Washington. “Democrat Jacqui Irwin doesn't back down. As the mayor of Thousand Oaks and in the State Assembly, every step of the way, Jackie took on the powerful and won. Now she's taking her fight to Washington to stand up to MAGA extremists, defend Social Security and Medicare from cuts, lower costs for working families. Jacqui Irwin, our fighter for Congress. Endorsed by the California Democratic Party.”
“Meet Alex Bores' buddies, bankrolling his state campaigns. One of them's in jail. Yeah, that guy. Bores got over $100,000 in support from Sam Bankman-Fried. Sam may be in prison for stealing billions, but his pals are still helping Alex. Their vision? Controlling all technology to make themselves billions. No matter who gets left behind, it's the con of the century. Bores and his buddies are wrong for Manhattan. Think Big PAC is responsible for the content of this ad.”
“Alex Bores had plenty to say about why he left Palantir. Too bad none of it was true. He chose to quit just five days after he got a formal warning about sexually explicit comments he allegedly made. His exit interview told the tale. He was burnt out. Too much travel. Did he say anything about ICE? Did he protest? Nope. Not a bit. Some jobs just don't work out. It's time for Alex Bores' next exit interview.”
“Soldier. Husband. Father. Alabama conservative Barry Moore is rooted in his faith and service to country. It's why President Donald J. Trump endorsed Barry Moore for Senate. Moore is stopping illegal immigration and fighting for the Trump agenda. President Trump knows the Senate needs Barry Moore, giving Barry his complete and total endorsement. Barry Moore. “Alex Bores' mind is in many places. Too bad none of them are in Manhattan. He's road tripping to the Bay to raise his millions. No wonder only 12% of his campaign cash comes from here. His first campaign was backed by Sam Bankman-Fried. And now he has three dark money super PACs spending millions to cover his tracks. Bores' mind is anywhere but Congress. Know the truth about who's really backing Bores. Think Big PAC is responsible for the content of this ad.”
